Dispatch from The National Hispanic University

PlaqueThere’s something to be said about the writer who doesn’t keep up with his blog. As many of you know I’m getting married, and contrary to popular belief, (most) poets don’t make much money from their poetry, thus I’m forced to teach extra class loads to help fund my wedding. The extra time I spend in the classroom and grading has a consequential effect on writing and other importants like grant writing. And of course, blog writing.

I write to inform that on June 7, 2008, I was awarded Faculty Adjunct of the Year at The National Hispanic University’s Saturday’s commencement ceremony. I was presented with a very nicely engraved plaque for excellence in teaching first-year composition and multicultural literature. It was a doubly honor being that it was student nominated. Many Thank Yous to all who took the time to fill out that nomination sheet.

In other news, my webmaster, Henry Leung, is off to China for six months starting today. Henry just finished his sophmore year at Stanford University as an East Asian Studies major, though he tells me he may switch back to English literature. Henry will first be living in Bejing where he has procured himself a position as a creative writing instructor to young adults this summer, then he moves on to Hong Kong where he’ll be a Stanford study-abroad student for the rest of the year. Or it could be the other way around.

Surely www.john-olivares-espinoza.com will miss him and probably take a hit when it comes to updates. Before leaving, Henry left me instructions on how to maintain my site, but oh geez, good luck to me.

I met Henry when he was 15 at the National Book Foundation Summer Writing Camp. Boy, he had some talent then, and even now it’s still proven.
